Volunteer

Volunteers have always played an essential role in Manna Meal’s mission.

With the support of our community, we are able to ensure that the hungry can eat.

Every day, volunteers like you help us transform hundreds of pounds of donated food (and produce from our garden) into healthy meals for our most vulnerable neighbors. The assistance of volunteers is vital to all our daily operations: from helping out with administrative tasks, to food pick-up and delivery, to preparing and serving meals to our guests, we’re always looking for individuals and groups to lend a hand.

Whether you’re interested in a weekly or monthly commitment, have prior experience or none, we can find a spot that works for you. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome, however, volunteers under the age of 15 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

If you’re interested in volunteering or just want to learn more, please take a moment to explore available shifts through our online self-scheduling portal here.

You may also email us at volunteer@mannameal.org or call to speak with one of our volunteer coordinators at 304-345-7121. You can also read more about the various volunteer opportunities available at Manna Meal below!

Volunteers are needed to help out in the kitchen as well as work the line (i.e. serve meals to guests).

8am–9am: Volunteers help serve breakfast.

9am–11am:  Volunteers take on kitchen duties and help prepare for lunch.

11:30am–2pm: Volunteers assist with serving lunch and after lunch clean-up.

Assistance with food pick-up and delivery is also appreciated! Volunteers can pick up products from stores/restaurants and then deliver them to Manna Meal. These times vary.

We also have administrative volunteer opportunities available. Administrative tasks may include data entry or assisting with communication to donors.

We encourage you to complete this Volunteer Application and sign up for a shift in the kitchen, or as part of the green team keeping our grounds clean and tidy.

Volunteer “work days” are held at the garden every Tuesday and Saturday morning from 9am–noon, although times may vary depending on weather and the season.

To volunteer in the garden, email gardencoordinator@mannameal.org with your name and phone number. We send out a weekly email with the days and hours we’ll be working.

Garden rules:

  • We always work as a group, never by ourselves.

  • We are on private property and respect the owner’s privacy.

  • No need to let us know in advance whether you’re able to work or not. Just show up at the garden!

  • No flip flops—please wear closed toe shoes.

  • Bring your own water and snacks.

  • If you can, supply your own work gloves. We have extras if that is a challenge.

  • We supply tools, although you are welcome to bring additional.

  • If you need a gardening pad for your knees, please bring your own.

“Manna Meal gave me a reason. Before I started coming here, I didn’t care about anything.”

Richard, like many others, has found a lifesaving sense of community in Manna Meal’s dining room.
